Wicked Is One Wicked Musical

Why are Broadway musicals so popular? That question had been raging on for a couple of years now among a new wicked_2010hiresgeneration of kids who can’t think beyond violent video games and rap songs and are born obsessed with documenting their every single thought on social media. The Answer: Because of brilliant productions like Wicked which has proven once more why popularity of musicals continue to soar in this day and age. The production has ensured to the loyal theater loving audience that Broadway’s best days aren’t behind just yet. Not even close. Productions like The Book of Mormon, Evita, Mamma Mia and The Lion King have breathed new life into this particular form of entertainment, and Wicked has kicked it up a notch thanks to its amazing sets, brilliant choreography and music and immersive storyline.

The Broadway musical which was originally presented in 2003 has experienced the same phenomenal success its predecessor did, and has become a smash hit with the fans. The show has won rave reviews from all over the country and unanimous praise from critics making it a massive Broadway hit. During its original run the popular musical had won several prestigious awards namely 3 Tony Awards including the Outstanding Musical Award, 6 Drama Desk Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. Popularly dubbed as “The Untold Story of Oz” the musical is based on Gregory Maguire’s best-selling book titled Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West which was a parallel novel to the classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The show makes frequent references to the beloved Frank Baum book, and is written from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West whilst Dorothy’s journey through the Land of Oz.

The audience wakes up to citizens of Oz celebrating the death of the Wicked Witch of the West. During that time Glinda, the Good Witch of the South appears to explain, through a series of flashbacks, why the green skinned witch whose name is Elphaba melted and their history together at Shiz University.

The characters of both the Wicked Witch of the West and Good Witch of the North have been portrayed superbly by Alli Mauzey and Jackie Burns who are the highlight of the show. The enchanting music, dynamic sets and costumes contribute heavily to the overall feel of the musical which shouldn’t be missed by anyone.
